This aerial image offers a glimpse at some of the growing spaces currently being used within Edinburgh’s urban core. The Inverleith Allotments were a project originally instigated in 1942 as the Kinnear Road allotments. This model of growing has proven to be popular, with a waiting list of up to nine years for prospective gardeners.

The tension between global food supply chains and regional sustainable production has never been more prominent than it is today. With a growing demand to decrease the oil-dependency of the way we produce and consume our food, a return to more localised models of production have proven to be socially and environmentally viable. The challenges of shifting this model to be more economically viable highlight some of the inherent complexities of the food system we operate within today- how can we feed the world’s population while still producing in a sustainable way, paying farmers and producers a fair wage for good, clean food?
